As an even younger rider than she is today, Shiloh Roseboom, 17, frequently contested the CPHA Style of Riding classes throughout the show year. However, Roseboom had never competed at the CPHA Style of Riding Jumper Championship – that is until today.

On Friday, November 8, Roseboom made her CPHA Style of Riding Jumper Championship – South debut a winning one, earning the victory aboard Colany 9.

The popular, year-end class is open to both junior and amateur riders, and, this year, the two-round championship attracted a field of 74 entries. Each of those 74 riders contested a first-round course, set in the Grand Prix Arena at the Desert International Horse Park. From there, riders who jumped clear over the fences and earned a score of 75 or above were invited back for a second “jump-off” round under the lights.

At the end of the first round, Roseboom and Colany 9 held second place – but that in itself was an impressive feat, as Roseboom had only sat on the 9-year-old Holsteiner gelding once before.

“I was actually partnered up with [Colany 9] last night,” continued Roseboom in speaking of the horse owned by Audrey Carmody. “He was excellent last night. We kind of just went from there, so this was my second time sitting on him.”

Roseboom continued, “I just wanted to have a good, positive, confident round and have the horse trust me and follow me around the ring. My plan coming back [for the second round] was just to be kind of tidy and make all the inside turns, and leaving out turns, necessary. Just to stay consistent and ride the same.”

That is exactly what Roseboom did, and her plan paid off, earning her a second-round score of 83. That score, coupled with a first-round score of 85.5 for a 168.5 total, clinched her the win.

With only one point separating the top three placings, second place went to Avery Winston on a score of 168, and Brooke O’Malley took home third with a score of 167.5.

“It feels amazing,” concluded Roseboom, who grew up training with Mike and Christa Endicott before moving to Tennessee and beginning to train with Ken and Emily Smith on the East Coast. “I never really did the finals, so the first time I would say was pretty great! This was kind of a last-minute trip [back West]. Things came together last minute, but it was worth it in the end.”
