Charly-Ann’s week at the Marshall+Sterling/USHJA National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. is off to a great start. Ridden by Amanda Gomez, the pair combined tight, efficient lines with a need for speed to win the $5,000 1.40m Welcome, their first class of the week at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center.
The 14-year-old Holsteiner mare, owned by Rising Star Equestrian, has no shortage of experience winning in various venues, but according to Gomez, indoor competition is one place Charly-Ann really shines. “[The USHJA National Championships] are awesome,” Gomez said. “It’s our only indoor of the year. Lucky for me, my mare loves to jump indoors.”
With Gomez and Charly-Ann stopping the jump-off clock in 32.371 seconds for the win, second place on a time of 33.919 seconds went to Simon Schroeder and Charlie Red Wine CS, owned by Morris Simchowitz. Rounding out the top three were Hannah Rohrbach and Lady Like, owned by Wells Bridge Farm Inc.
“I took [Charly-Ann] to the first week of [National Sunshine Series] in November, and she was amazing,” Gomez said. “Then, we saved her for this week. I was just ecstatic that she jumped amazing today, and we’ll save her for the big classes on Thursday and Friday.”
Gomez is a frequent flyer at the Marshall+Sterling/USHJA National Championships and has come this year with a full stable of clients. “We’re so happy to be back,” she said. “This is one of our favorite shows of the year. I talk about it every year. Where else do you get to stay on the same property as your horses in a hotel like this, right?
“The horses are jumping great,” Gomez continued. “The footing is great. The atmosphere is great. We’re all just happy to be back and looking forward to the rest of the week.”
